10th Festival Passions et Lamentations | Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber: Rosenkranzsonaten
The festival Passions et lamentations will take the public on a journey back in time to the 17th century and its never-ending collection of church music composers.
– Concert on Friday April 19, 2019 : Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber: Rosenkranzsonaten
This unique cycle is composed of 15 sonatas that hold a key position in the history of violin playing: by using different scordatures – a way of reconnecting the instrument’s empty strings – and by refined rhetorical means, the composer creates images and associations for the listener, such as the anguish before Jesus’ imprisonment, or the Crucifixion and the Ascension of Christ. This programme, dedicated to the 17th century instrumental repertoire, combines a selection of sonatas from the cycle known as the Rosary cycle Giovanni Battista degli Antonii, Johann Sebastian Bach and Girolamo Frescobaldi.
